Not all travel done by South Africans is to go on a fun holiday. Sadly, recent data from the Domestic Tourism Survey<\/a> reveals that there has been an uptick in people travelling to attend funerals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the numbers, funerals accounted for 11.2% of all 26.2 million overnight trips across the country. The number of overnight trips grew 1.5% from last year\u2019s 25.8 million. When it comes to day trips, around 33.5 million took place during the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The total spending on domestic travel came in at R60.4 billion, most of which was driven by overnight travel. And regarding the overnight trips, KwaZulu-Natal was the leading destination, closely followed by Limpopo, Gauteng and the Western Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of these trips were taken by car and taxi. This is, no doubt, because of the high cost of air travel in South Africa.
