Here\u2019s how Clinical Social Worker, S’lindile Thabede, recommends approaching this sensitive topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Be clear, open and honest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understandably, children will have a lot of questions, especially if this is their first time losing a loved one. Instead of telling made-up stories in an attempt to soften the blow, be honest with them. \u2018Use straightforward, age-appropriate language, such as \u201cdied\u201d instead of euphemisms,\u2019 advises S\u2019lindile. Substituting words, such as saying \u2018gone to sleep\u2019, and skirting around the truth can make them more confused. This is still a teachable moment, even if it is a difficult one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Let them lead the way<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, children can and should be protected from many of the intricate details surrounding the death of someone they care about. So, don\u2019t bombard them with information they don\u2019t want or might not be able to digest. \u2018Follow the pace your child is setting and only answer what they ask without too much elaboration,\u2019 says S\u2019lindile. They can be given more details \u2013 or more pieces of the puzzle \u2013 at a later stage when they are ready to receive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Offer your reassurance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s totally <\/em>normal for children to feel overwhelmed by death and to feel fearful about how it will affect them and their lives. It\u2019s the caregiver\u2019s job to give them the reassurance they need. \u2018Ease their fears by explaining who will care for them,\u2019 explains S\u2019lindile. \u2018It\u2019s also important to keep their routines stable.\u2019 Also, letting your child know what they can expect, such as the end-of-life customs<\/a>, can help them to feel more prepared and less anxious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Encourage emotional expression<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a traumatic time, it\u2019s important to allow your children to express themselves. \u2018Support their feelings,\u2019 encourages S\u2019lindile. Depending on their age, they might not have the vocabulary to express themselves verbally. \u2018Suggest other outlets for their emotions, such as drawing,\u2019 she says.
