Plan a funeral

Funerals are all different. What sets them apart isn’t just last wishes but the cultural and family traditions of the deceased. Some people might want a regular funeral, while others might want to be buried at sea or be cremated rather than buried. If you have to plan a funeral that honours the memory of the person who has passed on, here are some things to consider so that it is respectful and a ceremony that they’d approve of.

1. Know the deceased’s last wishes

Many people know exactly what they want when it comes to their funeral, from the rituals to the playlist to the decor. Make sure that you know what your loved ones envision for their end-of-life ceremony. If you are planning YOUR funeral, update your will to include your last wishes and what you want for your service.

2. Consider those who are left behind

The funeral is as much about the friends and family left behind as it is about giving the person who has passed a proper send-off. It’s important to consider what is important to the loved ones and what rituals they would like included. This can help them to mourn and get the closure they need to process and heal.

3. Include cultural and religious practices

What culture or religion does the deceased belong to? All cultures and religions have ways of honouring the dead. This could be a vigil, a wake, chanting and singing, or even giving offerings. Make sure that you include the ones that are relevant to the person who has passed away and their nearest and dearest.

4. Plan the appropriate rituals and catering

There are many different rituals associated with either religion or culture, which might require some planning. Not only that, but you’ll also need to organise what will happen after the formal service, such as a gathering, music and food, and a venue for this to take place in. This will ensure that the event is less stressful.

5. Choose an accommodating funeral home

You don’t have to go through the planning process and hosting of an end-of-life ceremony alone. Make things easier during a tough time by enlisting help from a funeral home that can accommodate the last wishes of the deceased. At 21st Century Funerals, we can arrange a funeral based on your culture or your family’s wishes and include the necessary practices.
