October is Mental Health Awareness Month. During this time, we come together as a nation to acknowledge that many people face psychological challenges and learn ways that we can come together to offer support to those who need it.

Losing a loved one puts you into a state of grief, which is another form of mental distress. Here’s how to look after your emotional wellbeing while you are grieving (and why it’s so important).

1. Make sleep a priority

We need to get enough sleep for our bodies and minds to function optimally. If you don’t, it can affect not just your physical but also your mental wellbeing. Practice good sleep hygiene by having a regular bedtime, and factor some restorative, mood-boosting naps into your day, if you can.

2. Be mindful of your diet

Food is what we use to fuel our bodies. While junk food might provide temporary pleasure, these feelings are short-lived, and afterwards, you can feel worse. Eat foods that nourish your body and have been shown to boost your mood. These include nuts, berries, leafy greens and oily fish.

3. Get your body moving

Love it or loathe it, exercise has proven mental-health benefits. Even if you don’t feel up to a sweaty workout session, just moving your body, such as going for a calm walk, doing some gentle yoga or dancing, can make you feel a whole lot better. It’s also important for long-term wellness.

4. Practice regular self-care

Establishing a self-care routine while you are grieving can preserve your mental health. This means looking after your mind. It can include activities such as practising mindfulness, having a relaxing bath, taking a break from technology, pursuing your hobbies or spending time with loved ones.

5. Reach out for support

Sometimes, talking about your loss can make you feel a lot better and help you process your emotions. Reach out to a friend or family member who cares about you to let them know how you are feeling. This way, you’ll know that someone is supporting you during this difficult time.

6. Seek professional help

If you are not able to cope with your grief, it’s a good idea to see a professional therapist. At 21st Century Funeral Services, we offer a month of free grief support with a registered counsellor to policyholders so that you can work through your emotions in a healthy way and get on the path to healing.
