At 21st Century Funeral Services, we pride ourselves on being one of the most trusted and innovative funeral service providers in South Africa. The business was founded by Mr. Mduduzi Khambule, the presiding Chairman of the organisation. Who has now handed over on his torch to his daughter, Aphiwe Khambule, who holds the position of Chief Operating Officer. Her combination of inherited legacy, modern strategic thinking and desire to care for the community blends empathy with enterprise, which is having a transformative effect on the industry.
A family legacy
Aphiwe’s involvement in the business started when she was younger and was informal. Since taking her formal position at the company, she has implemented significant changes in operations, products offered and outreach. She recognises that their role is not just to handle the final goodbyes but to empower families when they need it most and throughout their journey with the organisation.
One of the biggest changes she has made is revamping the Rewards Programme. This is a customer loyalty initiative that offers benefits that go beyond the conventional funeral package. She recognises the long-term commitment being made by customers and that they deserve support throughout their lives and not just when they pass away. MYPrestige Rewards offers all policyholders monthly benefits, including airtime vouchers, grocery vouchers and free career, legal and medical assistance and much more.
Another one of Aphiwe’s big changes has been leading the company’s expansion into the realm of financial services as a way of keeping up with the evolving needs of our customers. ‘Our community needs more than just a casket when the time comes – they need options, breathing space and support,’ she explains.
Cover with compassion
The legacy and future of this family business is to modernise the way funeral services are provided, but without losing its soul. Aphiwe, as one of the youngest leaders in the funeral insurance industry, is successfully steering the company into a new era, with her vision being to be a holistic partner in life planning and family support. ‘We must always have a soul,’ she says. ‘It’s not just about selling policies. It’s about showing up where it matters most.’
By leading with her head and her heart, with integrity and customer dignity at the forefront, she is showing the industry what a funeral business can be in the 21st century, and beyond.
